"The Patron Saint" of Cross Country Skiing

Tom Manka, my Grandpa, was known as “The Patron Saint” of Cross-Country Skiing. Back in 1987, he secured funding and permission to build a ski trail in the woods next the the Elementary School. The ski trail was then named after him and is known as The Manka Ski Trail.

He also coached the Girls High School Ski Team from the beginning of the program in 1996 until the end of the program in 2001.

To encourage more people to try out skiing, he purchased several sets of skis and would rent them out during the winter. When he became ill, Emily Nicholson, my cousin, took over the rentals. Emily proudly carried on our grandfather’s legacy and continued to tell his story. The rentals were never meant to make money, he just wanted to get people out skiing.

I am beyond honored to carry on the legacy of our grandpa by renting out skis, poles, and boots here at The Sports Shop. I plan to continue this tradition for many years to come. Please stop in or give me a call if you have any questions . Thank you!
